The ISC (Class XII) practical examinations should be scheduled between October 1, 2023, and January 31, 2024, the Council for the Indian Certificate Examinations (CISCE) said in a circular sent to schools last week.
Till 2020, the practical exams used to be conducted just before the start of the theory papers. This changed during the Covid pandemic.
“Please note that the practical examinations must be scheduled between October 01, 2023 and January 31, 2024,” the CISCE said in the circular.
It is applicable for physics, chemistry, biology, home science, fashion designing, Indian Music — Hindustani, Indian Music — Carnatic, Computer Science and Biotechnology, the circular said.
The dates of the practical exam for a particular subject, for different batches should
be finalised by the visiting examiner in consultation
with the school head and the supervising examiner appointed by the school, the circular said.
The information of the final dates of different batches has to be sent to the convener, the circular said.
The visiting examiners would be required to visit the school to check the size of the laboratory or laboratories and then consult with the head of the school and the supervising examiner to decide the number of batches in which the practical exam for the subject concerned would be conducted at the school.
Different schools have different laboratory setups and the number of students in the practical subjects varies.
The council has said that the last date for uploading marks awarded to the candidates for the practical exams is January 31, 2024.
“We intend to complete the practicals by January 15 so that students can concentrate on their theory papers,” said Terence John, principal, Julien Day School, Kalyani.
Since 2022, the practical exams are being conducted much in advance of the theory papers, several principals said.
In 2022, the council conducted the board exam in two semesters.
“Unlike earlier, the practical questions will be set by the visiting examiner and not sent by the council. Schools get a longer span and a more flexible time-frame to conduct the practicals,” said Mousumi Saha, principal, National English School in Baguiati.
If the question paper is to be sent by the council, the exam has to be conducted on the same day in all schools across the country, said Saha.
After the candidates take the practical exams, the visiting examiner will evaluate the work and submit the marks to the CISCE.
The head of the school would be required to send copies of the questions set by the visiting examiner to the CISCE along with the evaluated answer scripts of the candidates.
