The ICSE council has announced “improvement examinations” for ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) candidates.
Candidates can opt for an improvement test in any one subject and whichever score is higher between the two exams will be considered final, said Gerry Arathoon, chief executive and secretary of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), which conducts the two exams.
“The higher marks of the student from the two examinations will be considered,” Arathoon told The Telegraph.
He said students “are taking a chance by appearing in an improvement exam” and the council would not want “to deter them from doing so”.
The improvement examination will be held in July.
“In keeping with the recommendations of NEP (National Education Policy) 2020... CISCE has decided to introduce improvement examination w.e.f the examination year 2023, thus giving a chance to the candidates to improve their performance in any one subject of their choice for which they were confirmed for the main examination,” reads the circular issued by the council for the ISC improvement exams.
Separate circulars have been issued for ICSE and ISC candidates.
The principals of the schools concerned have to register the students who want to appear in the improvement exams through the Careers portal of the council from June 19 to 23.
Both circulars say candidates can take the improvement exam in any one subject.
“It may please be noted that the candidates who choose to appear for subject English will have to appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 of the subject,” says the circular for ISC.
As for ICSE, those who choose to take the improvement exam in a subject that has more than one paper (for example English, science or history) will have the option to choose one or more papers.
The circular for both ICSE and ISC says: “The higher of the two marks obtained by the candidate in the two examinations (i.e. the main examination vs the improvement examination) will be considered as the final marks.”
“Sometimes, a student does not perform well in a paper because of health or emotional problems,” said Rodney Borneo, principal, St Augustine’s Day School Shyamnagar. If such students are allowed to write the paper again, “it gives them a chance to improve their score”, he said.
Several school heads said they are disseminating the information among ICSE and ISC examinees so they can discuss with their parents and teachers whether they will take the improvement exam.
The results of the ICSE and ISC exams were declared on Sunday.
