“There are possibilities that any outside (external) student may enter the campus in the guise of an IIT Kharagpur student and create trouble for the IIT Kharagpur community/ student in many ways. So, to restrict this unauthorised entry of outside students into the campus, it is proposed that henceforth, it will be mandatory for all institute students to carry their institute-issued ID Card in hard or soft copy and get it scanned each and every time while entry into/exit from the campus external gates (Puri Gate, Gas Godown Gate and Durga Mandir Gate),” says thenotice.

It also says: “This will also help to have a check on the movement of IIT Kharagpur students.”

This could help to “trace” whether a student is inside the campus or outside the campus, the IIT has said.

Registrar Tamal Nath confirmed that the security section of the institute has issued a notice but he did not elaborate on the reasons behind it.

An official of the institute said now the barcoded entry pass of every person is checked and scanned at the entrance of the campus except the students of the institute.

“The students are being brought under this mechanism,” the official said.

An undergraduate student said they could not figure out why the institute wants to keep a check on the movement of students.

“We find the move a bit restrictive. We must be allowed to move freely.” the student said.

“We are not sure whether the IIT authorities held any discussion with the students before taking the decision,” the student added.

Calls and text messages to IIT Kharagpur director V.K.Tewari failed to elicit any response.

An official of the institute they have been planning to put in place a barcoded system entry and exit for students for quite some time.

“There are instances of students going outside the campus or entering campus in the dead of night. It is not always possible for our security personnel to track down such entries or an entry during odd hours under the manual checking system. Complaints of inappropriate behaviour by students also reach the IIT authorities,” he said.

“So, this has been put in place.”
