The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) issued an advertisement on Monday for the post of chief executive and secretary.
Gerry Arathoon, who holds the position now, is retiring this month.
“The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations recognised as a premier national Examination Board in the country is looking for competent individuals
for the post of Chief Executive & Secretary,” said the advertisement on the council’s website.
Arathoon has served as chief executive and secretary of the CISCE since April 2012.
“It is a fact that I will reach the age of superannuation by the end of September 2023 and will retire from the CISCE as chief executive and secretary,” Arathoon said in an email to Metro.
The advertisement says the place of posting will be New Delhi, though the “position is of a transferable nature”.
“The candidate, with an upper age limit of 55 years, should be a postgraduate with a Professional Teaching Degree from a recognized University and having at least ten years of teaching and administrative experience in a school/working in an examination board or any other educational organisation,” the advertisement says.
Candidates with experience of working in a school affiliated to the CISCE and knowledge of the working of the council will be preferred, it says.
The gross salary per month will be around Rs 5 lakh. Interested individuals may apply within 10 days of the date of the publication of the advertisement.
The application is to be addressed to G. Immanuel, chairman of the CISCE.
Arathoon had started his career as a teacher at St Thomas’ Boys’ School in Kidderpore.
From there, he went to St Thomas’ Church School, Howrah, and served as principal for five years.
Since 2002 he has served the council in various capacities.
Arathoon was in the Calcutta office of the council from 2002 to 2006, before moving to Delhi. From August 2006 to March 2007, he was the officiating chief executive and secretary.
From March 2007 to April 2012 he was additional secretary and officiating chief executive and secretary.
“It has been a most rewarding and a life-enriching experience and journey for me to have personally witnessed and been a part of CISCE’s growth and transition during this time,” he wrote in the email.
“Over the years, the CISCE has constantly endeavoured to improve itself, always keeping the well-being and interest of the student as the focal point of all its activities. The CISCE has consciously lived up to the principle of being ‘one of the premier education Boards’ in the country,” he wrote.
“As we move forward, especially now, where there is a paradigm shift in the education system, the CISCE is in the cusp of achieving even greater success and glory. I wish the CISCE every success in its journey ahead,” Arathoon wrote.
In June, the council has announced a shift towards critical-thinking questions for the board examinations from 2024. The council, like many others in academia, is striving to discourage rote learning more than ever before, teachers in Calcutta say.
