What happens when your score in JEE Mains isn’t good enough for IITs and NITs? It’s just a pit stop and certainly not the end of the road for you. By clearing other Engineering entrance exams conducted by states and private institutes, you can realise your long-cherished dream of becoming an Engineer and get admission to any course of your choice.
State-level Engineering entrance exams:
West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE)
WBJEE is a centralised test conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board for admission to private and government engineering institutions in West Bengal.
- Eligibility: You need to pass your Class XII board exams with Physics, Chemistry and Maths as compulsory subjects. Or you need to clear your 10+3 diploma exams with Maths as a compulsory subject. You also need to score at least 50% in each of the compulsory subjects and maintain at least 50% in aggregate.
- Mode: This OMR-based exam is held offline. You will need to write two papers in WBJEE.
- Papers:
- Paper-I: Maths.
- Paper-II: Physics and Chemistry (combined).
- If you write both papers, you’ll be eligible for admission to Engineering, Technology and Architecture programmes based on your ranking.
- If you appear only for Paper 2, you’ll be eligible for admission to Pharmacy programmes only. However, to enrol in Pharmacy programmes at Jadavpur University, you need to appear for both Papers 1 and 2.

Just like West Bengal, many states conduct their own joint entrance exams. If you clear these, you’ll be able to get into Engineering institutes in those states.

Private engineering college entrance exams:
Apart from state-level entrance exams, some private engineering colleges conduct their own entrance tests.
Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test (BITSAT)
BITSAT is a common entrance test held for admission to undergraduate programmes at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad. The exam is a computer-based online test that includes questions from the fields of Physics, Chemistry, English Competence, Logical Reasoning, Maths and Biology.
You can apply to appear for BITSAT 2022 until June 10.
Aligarh Muslim University Engineering Entrance Exam (AMUEEE)
AMUEEE is an online entrance test held annually for admission to BTech/BE courses at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). This national-level test is highly regarded by Engineering and Architecture students.
Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM GAT)
GITAM GAT is an online entrance test conducted by Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM) University for admission to its UG and PG courses in Pharmacy, Technology and Architecture. You can clear this exam for admission to any of the GITAM campuses in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.
Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology Entrance Examination (KIITEE)
KIIT Entrance Examination (KIITEE) is an online national-level entrance examination conducted by Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar, for admission to the engineering courses offered by the institute.
VIT Engineering Entrance Exam (VITEEE)
It's a common online entrance exam for admission to Engineering courses at Vellore Institute of Technology campuses in Vellore, Chennai and Andhra Pradesh.
The deadline for VITEEE 2022 applications is May 30. The exam will be held between June 30 and July 6.
