Every time you're happy, you dance. If you're feeling sad, you sing or play an instrument. On stage, you express yourself through various personalities. Do you not? Especially with performing arts, once you experience an emotion, you constantly gravitate toward it. As Aristotle stated, “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.”
Performing arts have always been a part of human civilization. It has developed through time to achieve its current state. Humans like finding ways to express their creative side, and the performing arts enable them to do just that. The performing arts include anything from vocal and instrumental music, dance, and theatre to sung poetry, and more.
Impact On Children’s Development
Performing Arts can have a very healthy contribution to a child’s overall development. They help to develop social, emotional, physical, and intellectual capacities, which improve intellectual, physical, and social abilities. Let’s take a look at the benefits that can come from practising various performance arts.
- Music
One of the benefits of practising music, be it singing or playing any musical or percussion instrument, is an improvement in the ability to focus and learn. Thus, when practising music, children acquire skills like patience, coordination, and teamwork.
- Dance
Dancing helps students relax physically. Being an excellent form of physical exercise, it also helps to increase their strength and flexibility.
- Drama
Drama is seen as a great way to instil confidence. Children who take part in theatre and acting usually express themselves better, whether it is in the way they speak, present, write or enact.
Tell A Tale
The impact of practising performing art has been enormous in today’s time. Let’s hear from someone who has been passionately involved in performing art and finding a way to make it a flourishing career.
“Dance has impacted my life the most, I must say. My entire world revolves around it. Since I was a kid, I have always aspired to become a choreographer and gradually I’m moving towards making my career in this field. Dance gives me a new way to live… Dance is a synonym for Akanksha, I feel. Since the time people know me, they know me as a dancer. I have never had any other identity I feel and I am most glad”, said Akanksha Ray, dancer, choreographer and founder of Nritya Taal.

Importance Of Performing Arts
Performing arts have been a part of our lives for as long as humans have existed, but their benefits to students have not always been explored. However, if you come to think of it, Performing Arts may help children develop their personalities as well as improve their communication skills. Additionally, young people have the opportunity to learn about their own and other cultures, which enriches them and encourages them to explore other creative outlets as well.
So, in a nutshell, here are some of the reasons we should encourage young children to take up performance arts
- Self Expression
Self-expression helps kids consider who they are and who they want to become as adults, and it is essential for the development of their identity.
- Creativity
Students develop original plays or draw on their experiences in theatre. They improvise in dance and music classes, creating lyrics and movements that represent their experiences or are drawn from imagination, all of which go beyond what is taught in the classroom. It has been observed that children involved in an extracurricular activity or performing art are usually better able to express their creativity.
- Cultural Appreciation
Drama, music, and dance have historically reflected cultural ideals and practices. Students become much more open and accepting of various cultures by participating in these activities, which also helps them become more empathetic individuals.
Students benefit from performing art because they gain exposure, discover their potential, and have the opportunity to perform and display their talents in a variety of settings. They may learn significant life skills if performing arts are incorporated both in and outside of the classroom. In the long run, the skills they acquire from the performing arts can help them to achieve greater heights in life.
