With ICSE Examinations just a few days away, students are working hard to make the first big examination of their life a success. With students in the final leg of their preparations, The Telegraph Online Edugraph spoke with experts to help them in their journey.
The Telegraph Online Edugraph spoke with educator Saswati Sarkar from Future Foundation School, Kolkata who provided valuable guidance for those students who have Bengali as their second language.
The theory paper on Bengali will consist of two sections, i.e. Section A and Section B. Both sections will have 40 marks each, totalling 80 marks.
Section A
Section A will consist of Essay, Letter, Comprehension and Grammar.
While full marks for Essay is 15, Letter, Comprehension and Grammar will have 7, 10 and 8 marks respectively.
Essay
Essay will consist of 15 marks and will be testing the writing skills of a student. Students will have to write one essay on a particular topic from among several ones mentioned in the question paper.
"Students should try to divide their essay into paragraphs. This will help them in securing good marks. Students should try to divide their essays into five paragraphs. The first paragraph will be the introduction while the second, third and fourth paragraphs will comprise the essay's body. The last paragraph should have the conclusion," said teacher Saswati.
Letter Writing
There will be two options for the students to answer from. One will be a formal letter while the other will be an informal letter. Students will be able to choose the form of the letter according to their choice.
"There will be separate markings for different parts of the letter. The format of the letter will carry certain marks while mentioning the address of the sender and the receiver at the proper places will help them in achieving good marks. Students must also mention the date in the letter. They can also gain marks for that," she added.
Comprehension
With a full marks of 10, students will have to answer 5 questions from the comprehension.
Here, Saswati advises students not to copy the exact words from the comprehension while answering questions.
"They should try to answer the questions based on their understanding of the comprehension without copying the sentences from the comprehension. This will help them in fetching good marks," she said.
Grammar
The portions from Grammar will have full marks of 8. Students will have to answer multiple choice questions on Bengali Grammar.
Section B - Literature
Section B will consist of Bengali Literature and will have questions from prose, poetry and novel.
Every question will have a full marks of 10 and students will have to answer at least one question each from any two books and two other questions from any book according to their choice.
"While answering questions, students should mention the names of the writers and the name of the story or poem from which the question has been asked in their answers. While answering, they should remember not to use the same word repeatedly," she said.
