From the pen of Prof. Dr. Rajiv Ganguly, Dean, University of Engineering & Management, Kolkata comes an honest and heartfelt note on taking education to the many. On this Teachers’ Day, let each one of us pledge to make education accessible to everyone at all levels, to do our bit to take India to the league of developed nations, as Dr. Ganguly envisages.
With the globalisation of economy, many new opportunities have emerged in the past few years. The Education sector is also greatly benefited by the policy changes in tune with international guidelines. With the advent of the internet and other recent technological developments, many new vistas have opened up. Global standard education has now reached even the remotest corners of the country, with a strong presence of mobile networks and internet connectivity.
It is also worth mentioning here that with a standard internet connection, which is very commonly available today, a huge pool of knowledge is available for free. And this is boosting the learning mechanism of deserving candidates, even from very humble economic backgrounds. This is perhaps the most important change that has occurred in the past few years and it is impacting the learning mechanism in a really positive way.
The common student pool at remote geographical locations, who would earlier not have access to knowledge, are able to access even special content, which is boosting their learning. We look forward to a day when the currently existing ‘digital divide’ will vanish and it will further boost the learning of the youth. We are blessed to have a huge pool of young students who may be global assets if properly trained. In fact, modern facilities are breaking the geographical barriers with world-class lectures by globally renowned faculties, various types of animation, real-life videos and other learning platforms are seamlessly integrating to boost holistic learning even for those who may be present at some remote corner of the country.
The various opportunities, information and other issues shared widely not only serves to illuminate them, but also generates a big interest in new areas. Areas which were earlier not accessible to the masses from the comfort and convenience of their homes. Not only the students but also the trainers themselves are deriving the benefits of the global standard educational platforms and are in a better position to guide students and help them to achieve their dreams and aspirations.
With the right education policies, access to global-standard educational content, the necessary support from the government and other non-governmental agencies, we look forward to a country where the youth can become assets. With the proper knowledge, appropriate skill sets and the right mindset, they can then take the society and the country at large in a forward direction. This would surely enhance the position of the country on the global map. And we look forward to moving from a developing to a truly developed nation in true spirit and form.
