The first career options are, of course, in data science and analytics. They involve extracting insights and patterns from data using various tools and techniques to help organisations make data-driven decisions and solve problems.

Data science encompasses a wide range of activities, including data collection, data cleaning, data analysis, data visualisation and machine learning. Data scientists use programming languages like Python or R, statistical techniques and machine learning algorithms to make predictions and solve problems.

Consider a degree in computer science, data science, mathematics, statistics, engineering or a domain-specific area. Learn programming languages like Python or R.

Cybersecurity expert

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computer systems, networks and data from various types of attacks and unauthorised access by implementing security measures. Cybersecurity offers specialisations like network security, ethical hacking, digital forensics, incident response and cloud security.

You can get a degree in cybersecurity, computer science or a related discipline. Earning industry-recognised certifications can enhance your credentials. Some popular cybersecurity certifications include Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), CompTIA Security, and Certified Information Security Manager (CISM).

Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) focusses on designing machines that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include learning from experience, recognising patterns, understanding natural language, reasoning, problem-solving and adapting to new situations. AI aims to develop agents that mimic human-like cognitive abilities and surpass human performance in certain tasks.

Consider enroling in a relevant degree such as computer science, data science or AI- specific courses. Proficiency in programming languages like Python, Java or C++ is also essential. Utilise online resources like Coursera, Udacity and edX for AI-related courses. These platforms offer free or paid courses taught by industry experts.

Sustainable energy engineer

A sustainable energy engineer, or renewable energy engineer, specialises in designing and implementing sustainable energy systems and technologies. They find innovative and environment friendly solutions to meet the world’s energy needs. They focus on harnessing energy from renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and biomass. Their work is crucial in addressing climate change and promoting an eco-friendly society.

Such an engineer needs a bachelor’s degree in environmental, electrical, chemical or mechanical engineering. Consider pursuing a master’s degree in a field of sustainable energy. Look for industry certifications such as LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) certification, which focusses on green building practices.

Environmental analyst

An environment and climate change analyst, also known as an environmental analyst, analyses various environmental factors and their impact on climate change. Their key responsibilities include collecting and analysing data related to climate patterns, greenhouse gas emissions and environmental conditions. They also propose sustainable practices to reduce environmental impact.

You typically need at least a bachelor’s degree. Common fields of study include environmental science, climate science, ecology and geography. Senior positions require a master’s degree or PhD.

Blockchain developer

A blockchain is a ledger of information stored on thousands of computers worldwide. The information on any one computer cannot be tampered with without authorisation, making it very secure. Programmers who create and maintain this tech are known as blockchain developers. They work with platforms like Ethereum, EOS and Hyperledger.

A bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field is a must. Certifications such as Certified Blockchain Developer or Ethereum Developer Certification can enhance one’s expertise.

HMI specialist

A human machine interaction (HMI) focusses on creating seamless and intuitive interactions between humans and technology, especially in user interfaces (UI) and user experience (UX). They make devices, software and systems more user-friendly. They are crucial in industries such as technology, healthcare, automotive and gaming.

You need a background in computer science, human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology or user experience design.
