About WBCS

The West Bengal Civil Service examination is annually held by the West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) to recruit qualified applicants for 19 civil services posts divided into Group A, B, C, and D.

Eligibility Criteria for WBCS

The eligibility for the various posts and departments that fall under the WBCS varies. The West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) publishes these Eligibility Criteria in the official recruitment notification. Candidates must carefully review the WBCS Eligibility Criteria prior to applying. Meeting the criteria is mandatory and your candidature will be cancelled if you do not meet them. Here are some indicative figures to give you an idea:

Age Limit category-wise:

• Group A and Group C - 21 to 36 years
• Group B (West Bengal Police Services) - 20 to 36 years
• Group D - 21 to 39 years
• Upper age limit relaxation of 5 years and 3 years is provided to SC/ST and OBC candidates, respectively.
• PWD candidates are recruited up to the age of 45.

Educational Qualifications:

• You must have a degree from an accredited university.
• You must be fluent in Bengali, speak, read and write, as this position is a part of the West Bengal Public Service Commission.
• However, if your mother tongue is Nepali, proficiency in the same is accepted and you need not be fluent in Bengali.

Nationality:

• You must be a citizen of India and may be asked to present documentation to prove your citizenship.
• You can also apply if you are a permanent resident of the country, provided you can produce the official documents showing that you have been granted permanent residence.

Physical Requirements (only for Group B i.e, West Bengal Police Service)

Male Candidates

Height: 165cm

Female Candidates

Height: 150 cm

Relaxations are given for Gorkhas, Rajbanshis, Garwalis and Scheduled Tribes candidates.

Exam Pattern for WBCS

To be eligible for appointment for the WBCS positions, candidates must pass all three of the selection steps that make up the WBCS Exam Pattern. The preliminary exam, main exam, and personality test are the three steps of the selection process. For candidates applying to West Bengal Police Services, there is an additional Physical Measurement Test that must be cleared before the Main Examination. Only candidates who pass one round of the screening procedure are allowed to participate in the subsequent round. Candidates must receive marks that are equal to or higher than the cut-off marks in order to progress through the selection process.

• Preliminary Examination: Consists of 200 MCQs

The duration of the exam is 2.5 hours

The total marks of the examination are 200

On every incorrect answer, there’s a negative marking.

• Main Examination: 6 Compulsory papers and 2 optional papers

All 8 papers, including the optional ones, are of 200 marks each

The duration of the examination is 3 hours.

On every wrong answer, there will be a negative marking.

Candidates must pass all 6 compulsory papers and 1 optional paper.

• Personality Test: The marks allotted to each group for the personality test are as follows:

Group A&B: 200 marks

Group C: 150 marks

Group D: 100 marks
