Who doesn’t remember the magical night of July 9th? It was the semi-final match of Euro 2024; two of the most successful European football teams, Spain and France, were facing each other. France was dominating, leading by one goal, thanks to Kolo Muani’s wonderful header. In the 21st minute of the match, while the audience in the stadium and across television screens sat in anticipatory silence, a miracle happened. Lamine Yamal hit a bewitching, record-setting curved shot at the top corner of the goal post, setting the score to 1-1. Restoring Spain into the game, he became the youngest player, at the age of 16 years and 362 days, to score in a major match, breaking Pele’s 66-year-old record!
Before Euro 2024 had begun, expectant eyes were on the big stars of football. However, as matches passed by, it became evident that it was young talents who were propelling the tournament forward. The name that outshines them all is of Lamine Yamal, the 17-year-old wonderboy from Catalonia who, by the time he turned 17 this July, had already played 51 times for Barcelona and made 13 appearances for the Spanish national team.
His records include being Barcelona’s youngest player, the youngest goalscorer in La Liga’s history, the youngest player to play in an El Clasico, and Spain’s youngest goalscorer, among many others. In Euro 2024, he provided the most assists and was the youngest assister ever, besides becoming the youngest player ever to play in a major final. Nico Williams’ 47th-minute goal which pushed Spain further towards becoming a four-times Euro champion, was set up by Yamal. This is how rare Yamal’s breakthrough is!
Yamal is one of the most iconic footballers of the 21st century, with a shining career ahead of him. As expectant eyes rest on him, may his radiant performance on the field leave all starstruck.
