My most memorable learning experience is not a thing of the past. Rather, every day of my Sociology class becomes etched in my memory, all thanks to the teacher and his ‘masterstroke.’
I belong to the first batch of Sociology students. It was just our luck that we got the teacher who had taught us Geography in Class 10. All of us were excited to have him as our mentor, not because he was cool, trendy, or hip and happening, but because his teaching went beyond the boundaries of textbooks. For example, soil erosion veered to Chambal and culminated in Gabbar Singh and Sholay. According to him, every experience was a learning experience.
In Sociology, our discussions became more vibrant since we started on the topic of society. From Herbert Spencer to Satyajit Ray, our classes turned into an open forum. Our inexorable debates and discussions became a roadblock to our timely syllabus completion. Two classes later, we would be back to discussing kinship styles, then discussing our families and their quirks, and finally talking about families depicted in Bengali and Hindi films, before returning to avoidant and joking relationships. The stone of Sociology skips over the waters of multiple fields, creating ripples in our minds.
We learn more than just observations of society noted by others. We learn to observe man and the world through our eyes and arrive at our conclusions. We learn to never stop learning. This quest for ‘more’ makes the whole Sociology experience a memorable and enchanting one.
