The curtain has closed on The Telegraph Online Edugraph Workshops 2024: Summer Edition, much like the sun setting on a day filled with significant discoveries. The event left behind a legacy of joy, enriched minds, and an abundance of enthusiasm. From May 18 to June 11, 2024, students embarked on a journey through a constellation of captivating activities, designed to develop real-world skills and prepare them for the future. Held at the esteemed Sri Sri Academy in Kolkata, these workshops provided an immersive learning experience for children aged 8 to 18 years.

One of the highlights of the series was the Basic Astronomy workshop, conducted from June 5 to 7 by the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (BITM) in Kolkata. Aimed at engaging the attention of 8-12-year-olds, this 3-day workshop allowed young participants to dive into hands-on projects such as constructing a sundial to measure local time, building a model to study the zodiac constellations, and creating a star clock. The BITM, the first science museum in India under the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Govt of India, is renowned for its efforts to popularise science among youth through interactive models, exhibitions, and educational programmes.

The mentor and Science Communicator from BITM reflecting on the experience said, “Over the last three days, we had a lot of fun. We did a number of projects with the students from different schools. The students were very enthusiastic. They asked a number of questions. Some of the students gave us the feedback that we could have organised the workshop spanning more number of days and pulled off more projects. However, in the limited time we had we tried to make them aware of the fact that astronomy is a basic thing and it should be taught in the lower school classes. Sometimes their questions also made me pause for a while and think before giving an answer because their questions were very simple, and you know that, simple questions are very difficult or are the real tough questions. So I, personally, enjoyed the summer workshop through talking to students during project-making. I enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with the students.”
