Music is perhaps one of the most powerful mediums of expression. It not only helps you sooth your mind after a long tiring day, but also motivates you to take up challenges. Not only love, anguish or anger, the expressions of music have fuelled almost all of the major democratic movements across the globe.
In the last two years, we at the Telegraph online Edugraph have identified several musical talents from across schools in eastern India. In 2022, it was Shraddha Oraon from Techno India Group Public School, Falakata. Shraddha developed interest in music when she was only 3 years old when she used to join her mother in the latter’s music classes. With a god-gifted voice, she started training and today, is a trained classical singer, who has completed up to year five of Rabindra sangeet.
In the same year, we also saw Tapolabdha Sardar from Vivekananda Mission School, Kolkata in 2022. An introvert by nature, she finds peace and self-expression through classical music and believes that music is the only medicine that our ‘heart and soul’ needs. While she aims to become a cardiologist and treat people's hearts, her vocal talent fills listeners hearts with so much emotion and joy.
In the 2023 edition of The Telegraph Online 18 under 18 awards we met Anirban Roy from Don Bosco School, Howrah. The jury was mesmerised by his amazing performance on the flute. The musical notes from Anirban’s flute will seep into your mind and heart and will leave you in awe. Taking inspiration from his father, Anirban started playing the flute at the tender age of 4.
Pursuing his passion, this young talent has already won several accolades at this tender age.
Also in 2023, the jury was regaled by Rajvi Purkayastha from Delhi Public School, Guwahati. At the age where children are busy with their toy, Rajvi was drawn towards music. Rajvi also strives to create her own music and has already released her first album containing instrumental tracks she has composed. Apart from violin, Rajvi also plays a variety of other instruments like the Ukulele, Guitar and aktara.
Quite a year for music, 2023 also saw Lahama Das Talukdar from Berhampore Lipika Memorial Girls’ High School, Berhampore, take the stage. The class 11 student is a gifted musician and practises the unique Dhrupad style of Hindustani Classical Music. A genre that is rarely practised, even by stalwarts, Lahana was inspired by her mother to take up the challenge. To master the difficult gharana, she also persevered through online singing lessons during the Covid 19 outbreak.
