Spectrum 2023: A Rainbow of Intellect organised by SXC, Kolkata

As Stephen Hawking quoted “The past, like the future, is indefinite and exists only as a spectrum of possibilities”, the Postgraduate and Research Department of Physics, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata brought together numerous possibilities to showcase knowledge, talent, teamwork and camaraderie through its annual departmental fest, Spectrum which was successfully organized on the 15 February 2023

Spectrum’23 had its grand opening by the hands of Hon’ble Principal Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio, SJ. The opening ceremony was also chaired by esteemed dignitaries which included the likes of Dr. Bertram Da Silva, Vice-Principal, Arts and Science, Dr. Indranath Chaudhuri, Head, Dept. of Physics, the Dean of Science as well as the Dean of Arts and chief guest Prof. Subir K. Das, Theoretical Sciences Unit, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore.

Spectrum’23 served as the stage to reveal Horizon’22, the annual magazine of the Dept. of Physics, by none other than the Respected Principal of the college. Horizon’22 has set a bar of excellence which wouldn’t have been possible without the contribution of Senior Associate Professor, Dr. Sarbari Guha. Mr. Lazurus Francis Osta, the department’s very own Dilip Sir, who was the man behind revolutionizing the Physics Laboratory was also felicitated and welcomed as one of the guests of the day.

The jewel of the programme, Prof. Das, blissed the morning with an engaging talk on “The Phase Transitions in the Beautiful World of Active Matter” which struck the curiosity of not all the attendee students but also the experienced faculty.

Spectrum’23 offered a plethora of events which tested the skills of students in various aspects of the contemporary world. The events included “CLUE– MINATI” – Treasure Hunt, “LIFE IN A REFLECTION” – Photography, “STAGE THE THOUGHTS” – Paper Presentation and “MIND THE MOMENTUM” – General Quiz.

Spectrum’23 paid tribute to Late Nilangshu Saha, an ex-student of the department, who inspired many to lead a meaningful life and showed irreparable resilience in battling cancer. It also mourned the death of Mr. Bidyut Kumar Saha, support staff in the Physics Laboratory.

The final hours of the event were filled with entertainment. As the participants donned their costumes to perform in front of a packed-up audience, weeks of dedication, determination and hard work were clearly visible since they all pulled off the cultural part with flamboyance, mastery and ease. All one could hear was constant applause and appreciation. Each and every act was so mesmerizing that one could hardly take his/her eyes off the participants.

The closing ceremony commenced with the prize distribution ceremony where students received numerous accolades from the professors covering each event falling under Spectrum’23. After the formal vote of thanks by Prof. Tanaya Bhattacharya, it was time for the HOD, Dept. of Physics to address the audience and with full enthusiasm he wished the next Spectrum to be even a greater success.
