The Future Foundation School, Kolkata, hosted an Inter-School Moot Court Competition Chapter 2 in collaboration with BML Munjal University, Gurgaon, on 18 July 2023. Twenty schools from across the state participated in the one-day event, where the teams put forth their arguments in front of the ‘Supreme Court of Parzania’. The bench of judges comprised the faculty of the School of Law, BML Munjal University.
The case presented in front of the Moot Court was ‘Pro-Nature People’s Association v Republic of Parzania.’ The premise was that the small fictional island country of Parzania is facing an environmental disaster because of extensive mining in the coastal region, for which the association is seeking a complete ban on mining activities. With this as the moot problem, the teams were asked to present their arguments as either the petitioners or the defendants in front of the panel of judges.

Speaking with Edugraph, Prof Dr Pritam Baruah, Dean of the School of Law, BML Munjal University, said, “We wanted to provide the students with an experience of what it means to be a lawyer, in terms of researching an important legal issue and arguing in front of someone (the panel of judges) who knows the issue very well, has read the research and would question them on it. This experience will help the students figure out if they are willing to pursue legal studies in future. It would also further our cause of wanting to help young Indians learn how to argue on matters they feel passionate about in a structured and ethically sound way. If one puts forward an argument they should have the justification for it.”

Manisha Ajmera of The Future Foundation School (TFFS), who conceptualised this event, claimed that TFFS was a pioneer in hosting inter-school moot court competitions in Kolkata. “We try to provide (students) exposure beyond textbooks. Students from schools across the city, as well as the suburbs, are competing today in this simulated environment, challenging themselves beyond their comfort zones, making the event all the more fun.”

Sushila Birla Girls’ School were declared the winner of the event in the end, while the host school received the prize for being the first runner-up. Awards for Outstanding Speakers went to Enakshi Das of The Future Foundation School, Vaanchhit Agarwal of DPS Megacity and Sidra Ghosh of The Heritage School.
