Basic management, career counselling, goal setting and leadership were some of the topics touched upon at the Boot Camp Certificate Course organised by Loreto College, Loreto College Alumnae Association and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong.
The 10-day online training sessions held from February 25 to March 6 were attended by 76 students. The training was followed by an investiture ceremony at Loreto College, Kolkata, on March 21.
The investiture ceremony was attended by Smita Bajoria, entrepreneur; D.P. Goyal, director of IIM Shillong; and Sr. Christine Coutinho, principal of Loreto College. Certificates were awarded to all those who took part in the boot camp to upskill and arm themselves with knowledge that would help them adapt to the dynamic corporate world.
“While interviewing and employing candidates, most companies seek additional skills in basic management, financial planning, IT, international taxation, integrated marketing concepts, media and communication. Skilling oneself in different areas is also equally if not more important than a basic graduate degree. It increases the candidate’s chances of bagging a good opportunity. IIM welcomes students from all educational backgrounds to be a part of their institute, which is why IIM Shillong agreed to conduct an online boot camp for Loreto College students. The course helped students clear some misconceptions they had earlier about pursuing an MBA,” said Bajoria, vice-president of the Loreto College Alumnae Association.
Students need to multitask and gain multi-disciplinary knowledge. Keeping this in mind, the faculty members of IIM Shillong touched upon topics such as personal effectiveness, basic management, career counselling, goal setting, leadership, finance for non-finance professionals, marketing innovation, design thinking, strategy for growth and entrepreneurship.
“Management is the need of the hour. As a student from a Humanities background, I didn’t know anything about management. I didn’t even know where to start. This boot camp bridged the gap. It helped me learn the basics of a management course from the best. Management skills are invaluable not just in business but in all aspects of life. Developing leadership qualities helps us become more confident as an individual. Maintaining a healthy life routine for oneself is the first step towards being a good manager, for can we manage others if we can’t even manage ourselves?” said Barnima Das, a third-year student of Geography at Loreto College.
Mehar Nasim, a student of English at Loreto College, has been exploring career options to take up after graduation. “Choosing a definite career path is a problem most of us face and are wary of. Short courses like these from reputable institutions help us get an overview of the course and also assist us in finding our niche. As somebody who has a keen interest in management and marketing and is considering pursuing an MBA after graduation, this course helped me find my interest and has encouraged me to take on this promising endeavor,” said the third-year student.
