From age three onwards, when a child enrols into a school, it becomes a second ”home”- a safe place for work and play, for academic, social, emotional, co curricular development that syncs with physical growth. Consequently, all the adult caregivers in this school-space become “parents” too. I would like to add here that not only faculty members but everyone in school–from helpers to gardeners, from office staff to guards at the gate–all are involved in the physical and emotional well-being and development of students.
Like home, there are intangibles that a School confers upon a student at every point of their 16+ years’ of association. The values that teachers inculcate in their students in classrooms are in seamless conjunction with the ethics that parents instil in children at home. The supporting hands that cradle a hurt, the comforting words that allay anxieties instil in children a confidence that after every fall there is a rise , that life itself contains both darkness and brightness and there is hope in every despair.
Oftentimes we hear parents telling us, “Ma’am, you tell my child, he/she always listens to you!” It is true that many teachers do influence mindsets, decisions, and approach to an issue, which become lessons of life management. A passionate teacher will always go beyond the subject he/she teaches. And many times we hear successful adults saying,“ I chose the XXX subject or pathway of study because of my middle school teacher.”
Just as we say that a Mother is the First Teacher for a child, a Teacher is also a Mother/Parent to a student–the message that he/she gives to the child, the child gives to the world.
