The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Calcutta kicked off its 75-year celebrations at the college street campus on Monday witnessing an exuberant participation by students, alumni, teachers and research scholars of the department.
The inaugural event of the year-long celebrations began at the historic Senate Hall in the Darbhanga Building with a dance performance by students followed by the inauguration of a plaque and release of a special stamp commemorating the department's achievements over the years.

The event witnessed the presence of Dr Santa Dutta De, Vice Chancellor of the university and Debasish Das, the Registrar of the university.
Speaking at the event, Professor Saumendranath Bera of the Department said that over the course of the last 75 years, the department and its professors have not only worked towards building reputation of the department but have also nurtured generations of professions journalists and scholars.

"Over the next one year, the Department will be conducting seminars, workshops and collaborate with other institutes. A detailed schedule of the events will be declared later. This will help students in getting better exposure of the ever-changing media landscape in this digital age," said Prof Bera.
He also mentioned that the department is receiving continuous support from the university and is revamping its infrastructure with more focus on imparting practical knowledge and hands-on experience to the students.
It was a nostalgic as well as a proud moment for the alumni of the university who parcipated in Monday's celebrations. They could be seen connecting with their old batchmates over cups of tea at the university.

"I am happy, excited and nostalgic to be a part of this celebration and ceremonial procession. The legacy of 75 years, this department produced best ever media professionals, educators, information officers, bureaucrats what not, and they are dominating the mentioned professions across the world," said Prof Debanjan Banerjee, Dean, Media Science, Techno India Main Campus.
The event was followed by an elaborate procession by the students, teachers and alumni of the department from College Street to Raja Subodh Mullick Square, commemorating the department's contribution towards academics and society at large.
