Harivansh Narayan Singh, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, while speaking at a gathering of students, research scholars, faculty members, officers and staff of IIT (ISM) said that India is making rapid strides as one of the largest democracies in the world.

“Democracy is most favoured system of governance and India is making rapid strides as a one of the largest democratic country. As per the one of the most accepted definition of democracy, the common people are at the centre of democracy and the Arthshastra of Kautilya also mentions the same in the first chapter itself as the people’s are of paramount interest to the head of the state,” he said.

He spoke at length about the ancient history of democracy in different parts of the country and the literature coins and other articles derived from the archaeological survey prove the existence of democracy in India during the Rigvedic period.

“As per the one of the most accepted definition of democracy, the common people are at the centre of democracy and the Arthshastra of Kautilya also mentions the same in the first chapter itself as the people’s are of paramount interest to the head of the state,” hesaid.

“The democratic values are being observed democratic spirit and democratic space in the ethos, lifestyle, thinking and behaviour of ours since the Vedic age of more than 5000 years ago,” he added.

The talk series, Conceptualized, Visualized and Imagined by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi began at the institute on October 6 with the lecture of Captain Yashika Hatwal Tyagi, a veteran of the Kargil War Veteran who spoke on Rising Nari Shakti Women Empowerment in India besides gender equality and other related issues.

Prof Srikanta Mishra, Research Professor, Petroleum Engineering, Texas A&M University, also a distinguished alumnus of Petroleum Engineering (1981 batch) during his visit to his alma mater also talked about “Vedic Graduation Advices and its relevance in 21st Century” as second lecture of the Talk Series held on November 7 in the institute.
