Shounak Roy, a sarod player from St. Lawrence High School, Kolkata a 17-year-old genius and disciple of the late Pt. Buddhadev Das Gupta, stood as a winner in the Telegraph Online Edugraph 18 Under 18 Awards. His musical journey, shaped by the guidance of the late maestro, has been further honed as a junior scholar at the prestigious ITC Sangeet Research Academy.

The Telegraph Online Edugraph spoke to Shounak and he added “I was very excited about The Telegraph Online Edugraph 18 under 18 awards 2024, last year also I applied for it but couldn't make it. Personally I like the concept of this award that is recognising young talents in India. I believe it's a very new and innovative idea from The Telegraph team. Seeing my name in the top finalists was a very great thing for me, as I saw that I was chosen out of the 2500 nominations that were received”.

Shounak's skills have earned widespread recognition, with his exceptional talent being acknowledged through various accolades. He was also a recipient of The Telegraph School Awards for Excellence in 2023. His journey in music also led to him being honoured with the prestigious Shri Shanmukhananda Bharat Ratna Dr. M.S. Subbulakshmi Fellowship in music

“The entire programme of that day was so well curated, sitting with the finalists was a surreal feeling, I also interacted with them and felt that they were all so brilliant in themselves. To top it all, the chief guest Sudha Murthy ma'am’s speech also inspired me alot” added Shounak

Our young winner has consistently stood out, his extraordinary musical journey includes noteworthy performances, few amongst them includes a captivating sarod jugalbadi at Santadas Kathia Baba Ashram that left audiences in awe.

“I strongly believe that the recognition I have received from The Telegraph Online Edugraph 18 under 18 awards is a huge motivation for me. In future this will help me to globalise Indian classical music and I would like to be the torchbearer of Indian classical music. I wish to incorporate my skills in western music also. Academically I aim to pursue Btech to gain more knowledge about acoustic and side by side I also wish to enrol myself in different sound courses” said Shounak.

Shounak Roy's win as a sarod player not only highlights his individual brilliance but also emphasises the significance of nurturing and acknowledging emerging talents in the diverse areas of art and education.
