The 76th Annual Session of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) 'CHEMCON 2023' was inaugurated at the Heritage Institute of Technology in Kolkata on Wednesday, December 27 by Dr C V Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal.

The conference will be held for the next four days in association with Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University and Heritage Institute of Technology.

The event witnessed the presence of Prof Anil Kumar Saroha, the President of IIChE and professor of IIT Delhi, Dineshchandra M Butala, former President of IIChE and professor, Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu, along with several others.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Dr C V Ananda Bose talked about the need to control the indiscriminate use of natural resources and a solution is needed to prevent humanity from facing a disaster.

"We are here to discuss on solving the problems of this nation. The major problems which lies before us are climate change, global warming, desertification, acid rains, ocean depletion among others," said Dr Bose.

"We have killed the vitals of the earth, the vitals of nature and now we are suffering for that. We are looking forward to the suggestions that would come from the conference over the next four days. The recommendations from the seminar will act as a game changer not only for India, but also for the whole world," he added.

The conference will witness a huge gathering of eminent scientists from across the globe at the institute who will discuss the future of energy and how chemical engineering will be shaping the way for the future.

"The conference is being held for the second time at our campus after 2007. However, this is the largest 'CHEMCON' so far with nearly 1,500 delegates. The IITs and NITs along with other scientific institutions in our country are participating in the conference along with delegates from 12 other countries," said Pradip Agarwal, CEO of Heritage Group of Institutions.

"A total of 65 sessions will be held along with industry sessions and exhibition on innovation and research. The theme is based on Hydrogen and renewable energy and hope to reach a vision and conclusion which will be of much importance not only for India but also for rest of the world," he added.

Prof Shishir Sinha, Director General of Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology, Ministry of Chemical Fertilizers, Government of India, was awarded the Heritage Institute of Technology Award for Innovative Research and Sustainable Process Development on Wednesday.
