Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (BITM) in Kolkata, the first science museum in the country under the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, is engaged in popularising and promoting science especially among the youth through various interactive models, exhibitions, educational programmes and activities throughout the year.

BITM facilities are specifically designed to augment the learning curves of the students not only on curricular concepts in basic physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, electricity, electronics etc., but also on current topics of interest in science & technology and related social issues. We also offer several very educational and exciting science shows for organised groups.

The workshop, designed for children aged 13 to 18 year olds primarily emphasised on a playful path to learning. The children got to experience and understand some of the best scientific concepts, witnessing theories come to life. Following were the concepts learned-

  • Centre-of-Gravity-based Dancing Bird
  • Mixing of Primary Colours with LED Lights
  • CD Spectrograph
  • Magnetic Repulsion-based Dancing Doll
  • Chromatic Magnetic Wheel
  • Action-Reaction-based Pedal Boat

Tarun Das, who was the mentor of the workshop, said, “The tenacity and the interest of the kids were amazing to watch. They were making their own toys and learning science through toys. Some of the kids were so enthusiastic that they themselves went on to add layers of creativity in the toys they made, trying to do something different. The workshop was thoroughly enjoyable for both the children and for me.”

The successful completion of the STEM Toys workshop underscores the importance of early exposure to STEM education and with that opens the door to endless possibilities within the STEM field.
