CIEM marked World Environment Day with a vibrant celebration on its campus. Spearheaded by Prof (Dr) Puspitaranjan Bhattacharya, Director of Colleges, the event featured a tree plantation drive that saw the participation of dedicated teachers and enthusiastic students. This initiative underscores CIEM’s steadfast commitment to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly focusing on environmental sustainability.

Recognising the critical need to address urban environmental issues, CIEM has undertaken significant efforts to reduce urban heat islands and enhance carbon sequestration. Urban heat islands are urban areas experiencing higher temperatures than their rural counterparts, primarily due to human activities. By increasing the green cover on its campus, CIEM aims to mitigate these temperature spikes, creating a more comfortable and sustainable urban environment.

With a sprawling five and a half acres of land available, CIEM has embarked on an ambitious project to plant at least one thousand trees. This target will be achieved through a series of plantation drives designed to engage and motivate students and staff in environmental stewardship. The initiative contributes to the global fight against climate change while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility within the campus community.

Prof (Dr) Bhattacharya emphasised the importance of such initiatives, stating, "Our commitment to the environment goes beyond mere words. By planting trees and creating green spaces, we are taking concrete steps to improve our local ecosystem and contribute to global environmental goals. This is an opportunity for our students and staff to lead by example and make a tangible difference."

The tree plantation drive on World Environment Day is just the beginning of CIEM’s long-term strategy to promote sustainability. The institution plans to continue its efforts throughout the year, encouraging ongoing participation from its community members. Each tree planted represents a step towards a greener, healthier future and a testament to CIEM’s dedication to making a positive environmental impact.

Through these efforts, CIEM aims not only to enhance its campus but also to inspire broader community action. By integrating environmental education with practical initiatives, the institution seeks to empower its students and staff to become advocates for sustainability, both within and beyond the campus.

CIEM’s celebration of World Environment Day underscores its proactive approach to environmental sustainability. By committing to plant a thousand trees and engaging its community in meaningful action, CIEM is making a significant contribution to the fight against climate change and setting a powerful example for other institutions to follow.
