The Clifford Hicks Memorial International Debate, established in 2015 to honour the legacy of Clifford Hicks, former Principal and Secretary of Calcutta Boys’ School (CBS) from 1952 to 1974, returned for its eighth edition from October 23 to 26, 2024. This esteemed event showcased the debating talents of students from prestigious schools across India and beyond, reflecting the wit, wisdom, and oratory excellence for which Mr. Hicks was renowned.

The debate featured two categories: Category I for Classes XI and XII, and Category II for Classes IX and X. Following rigorous preliminary rounds, the top seven teams from each category advanced to the finals.

Schedule of Events

  • October 23 (Wednesday): Inauguration ceremony at 9:00 a.m., followed by preliminary rounds for both categories.
  • October 24 (Thursday): Continued preliminary rounds for both categories.
  • October 25 (Friday): Finals for Category II took place.
  • October 26 (Saturday): Category I finals concluded the event, followed by a closing ceremony.

The inaugural ceremony on October 23 featured esteemed guests, including Mrs. Rupkatha Sarkar, Principal of La Martiniere for Girls, and Mr. D. L. Bloud, an internationally recognized educationist. The closing ceremony was graced by Chief Guest Shri Sudip Bandyopadhyay, a member of the Indian Parliament.

Participating Schools

The competition saw participation from numerous local, domestic, and international schools, fostering a diverse and competitive atmosphere. Local schools included Delhi Public School, Ruby Park, Loreto House, and St. James’ School, among many others. Domestic schools from various states, including the Bishop's Co-ed School in Pune and La Martiniere College in Lucknow, also took part, alongside international representatives from GEMS Modern Academy in the UAE and several schools in Nepal.

Moderators and Judges

The debate's integrity was maintained by a distinguished panel of moderators and judges for each category. Experienced educators such as Mrs. Hilda Peacock and Prof. Shabina Omar played crucial roles in overseeing the preliminary and final rounds.

Debating Topics

Participants engaged with thought-provoking topics, such as the efficacy of democracy in India and the media's role in shaping public discourse. These topics not only challenged the students’ rhetorical skills but also encouraged critical thinking and a deeper understanding of current global issues.

Results and Awards

The results of the debate were eagerly anticipated. In Category II, the winning team was Bethany High School from Bangalore, with Ankita Biswas from National English School, Kolkata, awarded Best Speaker. In Category I, Loreto Convent, Asansol emerged victorious, with Srijita Biswas earning the title of Best Speaker.

This year’s debate not only honoured Clifford Hicks’ legacy but also provided a platform for young minds to express their views, sharpen their public speaking skills, and foster camaraderie among peers from diverse backgrounds. As the event concluded, it was clear that the spirit of debate, much like Mr. Hicks himself, continues to inspire and shape the future of these young debaters.
