The Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC), Kolkata recently played host to the prestigious Assembly of Nations (AON) 2024, a grand gathering of intellectual minds and passionate debaters. This flagship event, now in its 7th edition, saw over 320 students from Model United Nations (MUN) circuits across the country converging onto the vibrant campus from April 4 to April 7, 2024.
Under the theme 'Delegate to Deliberate,' the conference unfolded with great pomp and fervor, featuring a diverse array of activities and discussions across 8 different committees. Collaborating with 22 institutions, BESC ensured a rich and dynamic experience for all participants.
The conference started with a spectacular opening ceremony graced by esteemed guests, including Major General BK Sharma and Major General PK Goswami from the United Service Institution of India, Professor Dilip Shah, the Rector, and Dean of Student Affairs, emphasized the transformative power of MUN-ing in shaping diplomatic skills among students.
Highlighting the global geopolitical landscape, Major General BK Sharma provided valuable insights, setting the stage for thought-provoking debates. Special guest Ms Marisa Gerards, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands to India, shared her wisdom on diplomacy, emphasizing the importance of emotional intelligence and active listening.
Following the inauguration, the investiture ceremony saw the induction of key members, paving the way for Secretary-General Sofia Parveen to declare the AON 2024 officially open. Committees delved into their respective agendas, sparking intense discussions and fostering diplomatic solutions.
In response to the prevalent global political turbulence, AON orchestrated an innovative approach by infusing 'Agendas' into its 8 committees, fostering insightful debates on pressing global concerns over 4 days. Among these committees, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) led discussions on "The situation in the Middle East including the Palestinian question," culminating in accolades for the USA, the Russian Federation, Syria, and Israel.
Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly Special Political and Decolonization Committee (UNGA SPECPOL) ardently pursued peace through decolonization, addressing "Israeli practices and settlement activities affecting the rights of the Palestinian people and other Arabs of the occupied territories." The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) confronted the "Human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories," underscoring the plight of displaced civilians and the repercussions of foreign intervention.
Additionally, the Lok Sabha committee delved into India's approach to the Indian Ocean Region and the Comprehensive Review of Places of Worship Act (1991), embodying real-life leaders in dynamic deliberations. Each committee offered a unique platform for delegates to showcase their prowess in diplomacy and negotiation.
As the conference drew to a close, delegates gathered for a delightful guest performance by stand-up comedian Rajat Chauhan, adding a touch of humor to the proceedings. The valedictory ceremony, led by Chief of Staff Daivam Nishanth, Deputy Secretary-General Abhishek Shaw, and Secretary-General Sofia Parveen, marked the conclusion of yet another successful AON conference.
The festivities continued with a glamorous Ballroom evening, exclusively for volunteers, delegates, and executive board members, culminating in a gala dinner organized by Team AON. With the curtains closing on AON 2024, anticipation mounts for the next edition in 2025, promising another unforgettable experience in the world of Model United Nations.
