On December 1, 2024, Bhavan's Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir (BGKV), Kolkata, celebrated its Annual Day with exuberance and splendour. Themed ‘Manan’ (Contemplation), the event showcased a perfect blend of tradition, creativity, and excellence; leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

The celebration commenced with the 'Guru Stotram', performed by the students, setting a reverential tone for the evening. The ceremonial lamp was lit by the esteemed Chief Guest, Tanushree Shankar, and Guest of Honour, Dr Dilip Kumar Maiti, alongside the Head Girl, Sindhuja Roy, and Head Boy, Rishi Singh.

In her inspiring welcome address, Deputy Director Sujata Ghosh expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and the school community. This was followed by the release of the 22nd edition of the school magazine, 'Ripples'. Recognising academic and co-curricular excellence, deserving students were honoured during the prize distribution ceremony, which marked a significant highlight of the evening.

One of the most poignant performances depicted the five elements of nature – Water, Air, Earth, Fire, and Ether – through a visually striking dance. The graceful movements and vivid expressions conveyed a profound message of balance and harmony, leaving the audience in awe.

Students brought Kalidasa's 'Abhigyanam Shakuntalam’ to life with remarkable acting, eloquent dialogues, and emotional depth. The performance seamlessly transported the audience into the heart of the classic, evoking nostalgia and wonder.

The whimsical world of Sukumar Ray came alive with 'Abol Tabol', as students enacted ‘Gondhobichar', 'Hukomuko Hyangla', and 'Ay Re Bhola’. Their engaging recitation and theatrical expressions captured the essence of Ray’s playful yet profound poetry, earning thunderous applause. A tribute to freedom fighter Matangini Hazra, titled 'Courage', narrated her sacrifice with powerful storytelling. The act was followed by a heartfelt dance to 'Ananda Dhwani Jagao', symbolising resilience and hope, resonating deeply with the audience.

The environmental crisis took centre stage through a dance interpretation of Rabindranath Tagore's poem 'Africa', portraying the devastating impact of human actions on nature. The expressive choreography served as a stirring reminder of the urgent need for preservation. Another poignant act, 'Hiroshima', brought to life the horrors of war. A recitation of Agyeya's haunting poem, paired with evocative performances, delivered a powerful message of peace and humanity, leaving the audience deeply moved. The programme concluded on an emotional high with a graceful closing dance to 'O Alor Pathayatri'. As the students lit diyas and gathered on stage, the auditorium glowed with warmth and unity. The evening ended with the national anthem, filling the hearts of all present with pride and togetherness.
