Networking is the name of the game q How can I network with industry professionals while still in college? Does this help in any way?

Networking with industry professionals while in college can be very beneficial. One effective way to network is by leveraging your college alumni connections, as they can provide guidance, mentorship and even job referrals. Platforms like LinkedIn and alumni networking events are great avenues to connect with them. Additionally, attending industry seminars, workshops and panel discussions can provide opportunities to interact with experts, and gain insights into the industry landscape.

There are several professional networks that offer opportunities for students to connect with professionals in various industries. For example, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) conducts events and workshops for students interested in the IT industry. Similarly, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) offers programmes for finance students, while The Advertising Club and Digital Marketing Association of India (DMAi) caters to students keen on marketing. Internships and summer programmes in companies are another avenue for networking. These opportunities not only provide hands-on experience but also give exposure to industry professionals. You can use these experiences to connect with your colleagues, supervisors, and other professionals, building valuable connections for your future.

Don’t forget about the excellent networking opportunities available at your college. You can meet and learn from brilliant academic minds in your field of interest. If there is a particular subject that interests you, you can reach out to professors in that field. Professors can provide valuable insights into their areas of expertise and offer guidance on potential career paths and research opportunities. Some of them can even connect you to people from the industry.

Go green q What career paths can I pursue in sustainability?

As people become more aware of environmental issues and the need for sustainable practices, sustainability has become a popular career choice. The field of sustainability offers a variety of career paths across sectors and disciplines. One option is environmental science, which focuses on issues such as pollution control, conservation and natural resource management. A degree in this subject may lead to job roles that include environmental scientist, conservation biologist or sustainability consultant, where you assess the impact of human activities on the environment and develop strategies to mitigate those impacts.

Another avenue of study is sustainable business and management, which integrates environmental and social responsibility into corporate practices. In this field, you could work as a sustainability manager overseeing a company’s environmental initiatives or as a green building consultant advising on sustainable construction practices. Apart from these, careers in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, urban planning and green technology also offer avenues to contribute to a more sustainable future.
