A fake circular purportedly issued by the Delhi University announcing resumption of on-campus classes in colleges from January 10 has been doing the rounds on the internet, PIB Fact Check, a platform run by the Press Information Bureau to counter misinformation, has revealed.

“No such order has been issued by the University,” PIB Fact Check tweeted from its official Twitter account on December 29. In reply to this tweet, the University of Delhi also admitted that the circular was fake.

The circular issued on December 28 stated that the varsity will reopen colleges for all postgraduate and undergraduate programmes and resume offline classes in phased manner from January 10.

The developments come at a time when the Delhi government has issued a yellow alert in the wake of the rapidly rising cases of COVID-19.

According to the tweet by PIB Fact Check, "A fake order attributed to @UnivofDelhi claims that University has decided to reopen colleges/departments and offline classes for all PG/UG courses in a phased manner from January 10, 2022. No such order has been issued by the university."

The University of Delhi also took to microblogging website Twitter to clarify that no such circular was issued by the varsity. "This is fake news. The University of Delhi has not issued any such notification on reopening of Colleges," DU stated in its tweet.

With offline classes likely to continue owing to the rise in COVID-19 cases in the national capital, the varsity has requested students to only rely on reliable sources for any information related to DU.

On December 29, Delhi recorded the highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases since May as a total of 923 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection surfaced in the capital. According to the latest health bulletin data, case positivity rate in the national capital currently stood at 1.29 per cent.
