IIT Kanpur-incubated start-up’s composting machine converts waste to manure in 10 days

Taking a step towards sustainable and efficient waste management, Agnys Waste Management Private Limited, a start-up incubated at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, has developed an automatic composting machine that can convert waste to manure in just 10-20 days.

The start-up has named the machine BHOOMI which is an acronym for Bio-composting of horticulture & organic waste into manure indigenously.

Agnys Waste Management was incubated at IIT Kanpur’s Start-up Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC). The waste management company has made a significant development towards mitigating climate change by coming up with an efficient waste management machine, a press communique from the institute said.

The BHOOMI automatic composting machine was developed in collaboration with the Imagineering Lab, IIT Kanpur. Research and development of the machine were assisted by the Engineer’s India Limited.

To convert waste into manure, the highly advanced machine is equipped with carbon filters, shredders, air pumps and solar panels. BHOOMI can automatically convert waste to manure in 10 to 20 days depending on certain factors. It is a faster and more efficient method of waste management than the conventional technologies available, IIT Kanpur stated in its communique. 

Speaking about BHOOMI, Abhay Karandikar, director, IIT Kanpur, said, “Proper waste management has always been a very pertinent and crucial issue, especially in urban areas. It has direct implications on the ever-growing concern for climate change. At IIT Kanpur, we resolve to work for sustainability and other key areas of environmental conservation. This is a prime step in this regard and I congratulate the whole team for developing BHOOMI. I believe this device would be a boon for treating organic waste and would contribute significantly towards the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.”
