ICFAI University Jharkhand conducts workshop on intellectual property rights

O.R.S Rao, vice-chancellor of ICFAI Jharkhand, said, “In today’s world, ideas are creating and growing businesses successfully, thus making intellectual property the most valuable asset.”

ICFAI University Jharkhand, in collaboration with The Patent Office, Kolkata, under department for promotion of industry and internal trade, ministry of commerce and industry, Government of India, conducted a one-day online workshop on intellectual property rights (IPR). The resource person for the webinar was Rohit Rathore, assistant controller of patents and designs, ministry of commerce and industry, Government of India. 

 

Welcoming the participants to the workshop, O.R.S Rao, vice-chancellor of ICFAI Jharkhand, said, “In today’s world, ideas are creating and growing businesses successfully, thus making intellectual property the most valuable asset. So, it is very important that all of us understand what constitutes IP, legal rights of its creator and how to protect it against violations. In this context, the workshop is of immense use for students, faculty and working professionals.”

Rathore further explained, with practical examples, various types of IP such as patents, trademarks, copyright, design, geographic indications, semiconductor and layout. Tracing the history of IPR in India, he said that the first patent in India was granted in 1856 for an “efficient punkah pulling machine”. He explained the process of application and criteria used for grant of patents and registration of trademark, copyright etc by the authorities. He also explained the guidelines on how to protect oneself from infringements. 

Rathore also elaborated on the career opportunities for students in government, private corporate as well as practitioners. At the end of the session there was a question and answer round with attendees of the workshop, followed by an interesting quiz program. 

 

Akriti Gupta, faculty of law, anchored the event. The vote of thanks was presented by the registrar of the institute Arvind Kumar and the programmed was coordinated by Alok Kumar. A large number of students of all disciplines, faculty members, working professionals, young innovators and entrepreneurs attended the session.
