Summary
Different boards create diversity and it is difficult to achieve parity in marking
A common test will come as a stressbuster for students and parents

M. Jagadesh Kumar, the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), spoke about the benefits of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) at a panel discussion.

Jagadesh Kumar stressed that CUET would create an “equitable situation” and relieve students and parents of stress.

“If you look at how the undergraduate admissions are done in some of the top universities, they are based on the board marks; 98, 99 per cent, in some cases, even 100 per cent. This has unduly put too much stress on the minds of students and parents. There are multiple boards in our country and, as a result, there is a lot of diversity in how the students are marked by these boards. If one student gets 80 per cent in a particular board exam, and with the same effort, if someone else, in another board, gets 99 per cent, then definitely this is not an equitable situation,” Jagadesh Kumar

“Because it is in CBT (computer-based test) mode, and multiple-choice questions will be there, I think it will be a good approach for us to use the CUET score for admissions in the undergraduate programmes,” the UGC chairman said.
