Odia and other regional languages will henceforth be taught at Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools nationwide, according to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday. According to Pradhan, the CBSE issued a circular on Friday allowing regional languages to be taught in its schools.

22 regional languages, including Odia, will be taught from grade 1 to 12 in CBSE schools, according to Pradhan, who noted that Hindi and English had hitherto served as the institutions' primary teaching languages. As stated in the New Education Policy, students will now be permitted to learn in regional languages.

He claimed that a student comprehends the subject more effectively than in Hindi or English when reading in his or her own tongue. For students who wish to learn in Odia or another language, he said, schools will make accommodations.

He claimed that the NCERT has also been requested to create textbooks in line with this. He promised that plans will be developed to offer instruction and administer exams in regional tongues. Pradhan said on Twitter that the National Education Policy (NEP) places focus on all Indian languages because learning in one's own tongue will help pupils understand any subject.
