Allahabad Court gives Dalit student Rs 15,000 for IIT seat allocation

The Allahabad High Court, Lucknow Bench, has contributed Rs 15,000 to Sankriti Ranjan, who belongs to a financially-weaker Dalit family. Ranjan had approached the Court as she could not procure the deposit amount for allotting a seat at IIT (BHU) after cracking the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advance, on November 29, 2021.

 

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JSAA) and IIT (BHU) are to now admit the student in Mathematics and Computing course (Bachelor and Master of Technology, dual-degree course).

The Bench has also instructed the BHU to create a supernumerary seat for the Dalit student, if there is any unavailibity of seats. 

 

According to the Bench, the student is to report at BHU within three days, along with the necessary documents for admission. Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh passed the order.

 

Ranjan scored 95.6% in Class X and 94 percent in class X. She secured 92.77 percentile in JEE Mains Examination and bagged a rank of 2,062 as an SC candidate. 

 

She applied for JEE Advanced on September 16 and cleared it on October 15, scoring 1,469 rank in the SC category. 

 

According to advocates Sarvesh Dubey and Samta Rao, the student and her father had written many times to the JSAA for extension of time, but did not get a reply. 

 

The Court on its own volunteered to contribute Rs 15,000, the fees for allocation of the seat; the amount was handed over to Ranjan after court hours on November 29, 2021.
